DON'T FORGET TO APPLY FOR YOUR HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION
Is it time to file for HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION? How do I file? Where do I go?
Eligibility and Application
Florida law allows you to claim an exemption on your primary residence which decreases the amount you pay in property taxes.
Every person who has legal or equitable title to real property and who occupies the property on January 1 of a given year, and in good faith makes it his or her permanent home, is eligible for HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION. To qualify for this exemption, you must file an application with your county tax commissioner’s office. The application must be filed between January 1 and March 1 of the year you are seeking the HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION. If the previous owner had the exemption, it stays in effect for the remainder of the year, so new owners must file their application in the following year.
Some counties have online applications for HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION while others will require you to file in person. Generally, you can download the forms from the county’s website. If you have any questions, you should call your county tax commissioner’s office.

Refinancing
If you have refinanced your homestead, make sure that the tax commissioner did not inadvertently remove your HOMESTEAD EXEMPTION. If the error was made, you will need to file another application.
**The homeowner is responsible for filing for their homestead exemption.
